Six Highlights You Need To Know:

1: Fans Are Now Creating Pop Culture

Fans no longer have to wait for content from movies, music videos, or events to get their pop culture fix. Thanks to technology, they can now create their own content that reflects their interests. In fact, the biggest trends are now generated by fan-made content. A whopping 82 percent of people aged 18-44 have posted videos on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok in the past year.

It’s also easier than ever to establish an online presence and even become “internet famous.” With the evolution in tech tools and the rise of AI, creating fresh content has become a breeze. In fact, 40 percent of those surveyed consider themselves video content creators.

2: The Rise Of The Professional Fans

As the digital world expands, fandom is undergoing a significant transformation. It is now becoming more stratified, with different levels of participation and engagement. Casual fans are those who have a surface-level interest in a particular fandom, while active fans engage more deeply by creating memes and remixes.

Then, there are professional fans who create content for other fans based on their expertise. A staggering 54 percent of people prefer watching creators break down major events into bite-sized videos rather than sitting through long events like Cannes or Oscars. Furthermore, 47 percent of Gen Z have watched videos made by fans of specific content, artists, or celebrities in the past year.

3: Diverse Formats Shape the Fan Experience

Content streaming is no longer limited to long-form content. Short-form videos, live streams, and podcasts have become key components of the fan experience. Creators have embraced storytelling across these formats, allowing audiences to personalize their consumption. An impressive 87 percent of people have watched at least four different content formats on YouTube in the past year.

4: Customizing The Viewing Experience

Creators now understand the importance of letting viewers tailor their own viewing experience. By offering closed captions and multi-language audio tracks, creators can attract more viewers to their content. Closed captions can add commentary to silent vlogs or provide context and inside jokes. Surprisingly, 54 percent of those surveyed appreciate content created in a language other than their own.

5: Creation Is Easier Than Ever Before

Fans now have access to an array of tools that let them participate in and add their unique touch to content. From clipping videos to remixing audio, these tools empower anyone to create and customize moments as they happen. YouTube’s clipping feature alone has facilitated the creation of 14 million videos each month in 2023!

Remixing content has become a popular trend, with fans mastering the art of adding elements from one video or audio to another. Additionally, viewers can create memes, gifs, and apply filters and special effects to videos. A whopping 65 percent of Gen Z viewers have used filters, features, or effects on video apps in the past year.

6: AI Reshapes Pop Culture

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing pop culture in various ways. Creators are harnessing AI technology to extend and reimagine ideas, resulting in over 1.7 billion views of videos related to generative AI tools in 2023. Fans are also utilizing AI tools to add their personal touch or generate new content that aligns with their preferences.

For instance, fans have gone viral on YouTube by creating trailers that imagine movies directed by famous filmmakers. Production studio Corridor Crew gained fame by using AI tools to create anime-style shorts without involving animators. An impressive 60 percent of people surveyed expressed interest in watching content created with the help of AI tools.
