Instagram’s New Update Will Soon Allow You To Download Reels

Instagram just made a big move. Gone are the days you use a third-party website to download Instagram Reels! In his broadcast channel, Adam Mosseri, the head honcho of Instagram, dropped some exciting news. If you’re an Instagram user in the US, you’ll be thrilled to know that you can now download those awesome Reels created by others and save them directly to your camera roll. It’s like having a personal collection of epic videos at your fingertips.

In his message, Adam Mosseri writes, “In the US, we’re rolling out the ability to download Reels shared by public accounts to your camera roll. Just tap the Share icon on a reel you love and select Download. Worth mentioning, Reels shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded and public accounts can turn off the ability for people to download their reels in Account Settings.”

Here are 5 things to know about this new update:

Convenient For Offline Sharing & Viewing

This new feature offers a convenient way to save your favorite Reels for later viewing or sharing. Just a few taps, and you’ll have the Reel saved and accessible anytime, even without an internet connection. Whether it’s a hilarious skit, a mesmerizing dance routine, or an inspiring tutorial, you can now keep them directly in your Camera Roll.

No Third-Party Apps Needed

Instagram eliminates the need for relying on third-party apps and websites to download Reels. You can now access the download feature within the app itself, making the process quick and hassle-free. The downloaded Reels can be easily shared outside of the Instagram app, giving users the freedom to showcase their favorite Reels on various platforms and spread the entertainment to a wider audience.

Only Available For Public Accounts

Adam Mosseri also mentioned that there’s a catch. While you can download Reels from public accounts, it’s important to note that Reels shared by private accounts are not eligible for download. The feature is specifically designed for publicly shared content. This is a great safety guard for those of us who are not comfortable distributing our private content.

Opt-Out Option for Public Accounts

Public accounts on Instagram will have the ability to control whether users can download their Reels or not. By accessing the Account Settings, these accounts can choose to enable or disable the download option, giving them greater control over their content’s distribution. This is super empowering for growing creators, whose content may be misused or reused for others’ monetization.

Not Available In India (Yet!)

This feature will be a game-changer for the millions of creators in India who upload about six million Reels every day. While this feature is currently available only in the US, it’s expected to go worldwide soon. But wait, Indian users can still download Reels without any third-party apps.  Just follow this simple trick:

  1. Open Instagram and find the Reels you want to save.
  2. Tap the share icon and select “Add to story.”
  3. Zoom in to fit the Reels into your story layout.
  4. Tap the three-dot button and choose “Save.”
  5. Voila! The Reels are saved to your phone’s storage.

In conclusion, Instagram’s latest update brings exciting new features to the table, enhancing the user experience and expanding the possibilities of sharing and enjoying Reels. The ability to download Reels from public accounts allows users to save and access their favorite videos offline, while respecting the privacy of other accounts that don’t love this feature.

The convenience of sharing saved Reels outside the app further amplifies their impact, reaching a wider audience across various use cases. Instagram continues to evolve and cater to the needs of its global community, providing an engaging and dynamic environment for creators and users alike. We can’t wait to see this launch in India!
