Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’, the current talk of the town, has occupied the position of most-watched series knocking off ‘Bridgerton’ with 111 million viewers within a month of its launch worldwide! Released on September 17, 2021, the South Korean survival series of nine episodes received critical and international acclaim.

Written and directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the cast of ‘Squid Game’ are Lee Jung-JaePark Hae-sooWi Ha-Joon, Jung Ho-Yeon, O Yeong-Su, Heo Sung-Tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-Ryoung. As stated on Wikipedia, “The series revolves around a contest in which 456 players, all drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a series of children’s games with deadly penalties if they lose for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize.”

Who would have thought that the idea turned down by various production companies for ten years would achieve such a major success under Netflix? Initially, Hwang wrote the idea in 2009 but ultimately, it was Netflix who took an interest in the project back in 2019 as part of their drive to expand their foreign programming offerings. According to Wikipedia, “Hwang had conceived of the idea based on his own economic struggles early in life as well as the class disparity in South Korea.”
