Vertical video feeds in apps have become a staple for many platforms. Following TikTok the format gained a lot of popularity and soon made its way to Instagram via Instagram Reels and YouTube via YouTube Shorts. While we have gotten used to it, there’s a new entrant in the list. Spotify has joined the party by testing a TikTok style feed in iOS Beta.
The video feed is accessible via a new tab in the navigation bar called “Discover.” The tab displays individual tracks which can be liked as one scrolls through and there’s also a three dot menu to bring up options for each song.
“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a spokesperson said. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.” Chris Messina even shared on his twitter what “Discover” looks like.
“The test comes as Netflix has started testing a similar interface in its iOS app to help users discover new content to watch. It’s recent “Kids Clips” feature shows content from its child-friendly shows, and follows the launch of a similar “Fast Laughs” feed earlier this year. As TikTok’s engagement hours soar, even non-social media platforms are becoming interested in using its format to help users engage with their own services.” says TechCrunch.
The Discover feed has been built on Spotify’s existing Canvas feature, where the videos can play alongside music.
