Rise of the OTT web series and the decline of YouTube web series

Remember the good old days when YouTube sketches and web series were all the rage? We couldn’t wait for our favorite channels (a BIG BuzzFeed fan here, btw!) to drop their next video, and we’d spend hours binge-watching them with our friends. But have you noticed that these videos aren’t as popular as they used to be? In fact, it seems like the industry is on the decline. So, what happened? OTT came.

Decline In Views – Is There A Reason?

Let’s face it, our attention spans are getting shorter, and we want content that’s quick, bite-sized, and easily digestible. Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts can be consumed on-the-go, more than ever before. It’s no wonder that the popularity of long-form web series is declining.

Plus, with streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime offering high-quality content, old guards need to up their game to keep up. OTT players have not only increased the quality of long-form content but have set a new standard for storytelling.

And let’s not forget the rise of individual content creators, who are taking over with their short, snappy content, which has a higher potential for virality and reach.

Current Landscape – What’s Happening?

But don’t worry, our beloved channels aren’t giving up just yet! They’re adapting to the changing trends and experimenting with new formats. Some of them have started creating vlogs and short-form comedy Reels that can be easily shared on social media platforms like Instagram. Others have found success by collaborating with brands to create sponsored content that’s both entertaining and informative.

One example is TVF (The Viral Fever), which started making web-series and comedy sketches for YouTube, but now, has transitioned to creating content for streaming platforms and even experimented with launching its own streaming service, TVFPlay.

What’s In Store Next?

The future may be uncertain for content companies that used to lead this industry, but for individual creators, the possibilities are endless. The rise of social media has opened up new avenues for creators to build their audience and monetize their content. Many creators are now diversifying their revenue streams by selling merchandise, creating sponsored content, and launching their own product lines.

Fret Not – Here Are 5 Ways They Are Adapting:

  1. Focus on short-form content: Creators should focus on creating short, snappy content that’s easy to consume and share on social media platforms.
  2. Experiment with new formats: Creators should experiment with new formats and styles of content to keep their audience engaged and interested.
  3. Collaborate to dominate: Collaborating with brands can help creators monetize their content and reach a wider audience.
  4. Diversify revenue streams: Creators should look beyond YouTube and Instagram monetization and explore other revenue streams like merchandise sales and digital products, like workshops and courses.
  5. Build a strong multi-platform social media presence: Building a strong social media presence across platforms can help creators reach a wider audience and overall build their brand.

So, there you have it, folks! YouTube sketches and web series may be on the decline, but creators aren’t giving up without a fight. By experimenting with new formats and focusing on short-form, high-quality content, creators can continue to build their audience and monetize their content. And who knows, the next big thing might just be around the corner! So, keep creating, keep innovating, and keep entertaining us with your amazing content!
