Karan Johar is undoubtedly one of the most known directors in Bollywood. With fame, comes trolling and criticism, which he very often faces. Recently, the Filmmaker took to social media, to express his disappointment over a comedy show’s portrayal of him calling it “in exceptionally poor taste.” Sharing his views through his Instagram story, he did not name anybody but the story sparked controversy and quickly went viral.
The incident occurred while Karan Johar was watching TV with his mother and came across a promo for a reality comedy show on a reputed channel. In the promo, a comedian was mimicking the director, specifically targeting his popular chat show, Koffee With Karan, by dubbing it as Toffee with Churan. While Johar refrained from directly naming the show or the channel, he was truly disheartened by the lack of respect from within the industry itself.
Karan Johar’s Instagram story read, “I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years it speaks volumes about the times we live in…this doesn’t even anger me it just makes me sad!“
Ekta Kapoor expressed solidarity with Karan Johar who is a close friend. She also shared her thoughts on the matter. She highlighted the prevalence of such instances, not only in comedy shows but also in award functions, sometimes mimicking the classics of Karan.
Following Karan Johar’s public statement and the outcry, the comedian in question, Kettan Singh, issued a heartfelt apology. He clarified that his intention was never to hurt the filmmaker and that he is, in fact, a fan of Karan Johar’s work. He expressed regret if his actions caused any offence and reiterated his admiration for Karan’s contributions to the industry.
The incident involving Karan Johar and the comedy show serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and sensitivity, even in the realm of entertainment. There is a thin line between humour and disrespect and one needs to be very careful about it.
