OTT and Theatre To Co-exist

Bandaa is one of those movies that has proved that OTT and Theatres can co-exist and are in fact complementary to each other. While OTT platforms have undoubtedly disrupted the traditional movie theatre industry, it’s important to note that the threat they pose is not absolute or all-encompassing.

In fact, OTT platforms and traditional movie theatres can coexist and cater to different preferences and viewing experiences. Both mediums offer unique benefits and appeal to different audiences, providing a diverse range of choices for entertainment consumers.

Diverse Viewing Experiences

Movie theatres provide a communal and immersive experience, with larger screens, surround sound, and the atmosphere of a shared space. On the other hand, OTT platforms offer the convenience of watching movies and shows from the comfort of home, with flexible viewing options, personalised recommendations, and the ability to pause, rewind, or watch on multiple devices.

Variety of Content

Both theatres and OTT platforms offer a wide variety of content, but their catalogues may differ. Theatrical releases often focus on blockbuster films, big-budget spectacles, and immersive cinematic experiences. OTT platforms, on the other hand, offer a broader range of content, including independent films, documentaries, TV shows, and niche genres that may not receive a wide theatrical release.

Accessibility and Convenience

OTT platforms provide easy access to a vast library of content, anytime and anywhere, with a simple internet connection. This accessibility is particularly beneficial for individuals who may have limited access to movie theatres or prefer the convenience of streaming content on-demand. Theatrical releases, on the other hand, offer a unique experience for those who enjoy the big screen and the social aspect of going to the movies.

Revenue Streams

Theatrical releases contribute to the box office revenue, which has traditionally been a significant source of income for filmmakers and studios. However, the rise of OTT platforms has provided additional revenue streams for content creators. Many movies and shows are now being released simultaneously in theatres and on streaming platforms, allowing filmmakers to cater to both audiences and potentially maximise their earnings.

Market Expansion

OTT platforms have expanded the market for content consumption by reaching a global audience, including those in remote areas without easy access to movie theatres. This expansion has allowed diverse voices and stories to reach a wider audience, promoting inclusivity and supporting a more diverse range of content.

Ultimately, the coexistence of OTT platforms and theatres provides viewers with more choices and opportunities to enjoy a variety of content in different formats. It’s a dynamic and evolving landscape, where both mediums can thrive and continue to meet the entertainment needs of a diverse range of audiences.
