How to Be an Effective Ally for the LGBTQIA+ Community?

ProudlyMe: Embracing self-love & unapologetic authenticity.

To honour Pride month and all those who associate themselves with the community, we at Social Nation have come up with a month-long project called ‘ProudlyMe.’ Through ProudlyMe we want to narrate the unheard stories from and about the LGBTQIA+ community and educate ourselves and people about the nuances attached to people living us Queers. Let us all be an Ally and embark on this journey to erase the ‘us and them’ divide and become more aware of our fellow beings.

What does LGBTQIA+ stand for?

To begin with, the acronym LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual, with the “+” symbol representing other diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. It is an elastic term to include all those who do not fit in the heterogeneous category.

The Pride Month

Pride Month is a powerful annual commemoration observed globally every June, that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community, their history, and their ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance. Through Pride Month, society is encouraged to recognize the rights and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals while challenging discrimination and prejudice. By fostering understanding, compassion, and allyship, Pride Month continues to drive positive change and promote a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Ignorance and respect or Awareness and respectful

We believe Education plays a significant role in promoting understanding, empathy, and inclusivity. By learning about the experiences, challenges, and history of the LGBTQIA+ community, we can better appreciate their perspectives and engage in more respectful and informed conversations. Only through awareness, we can avoid inadvertently perpetuating harmful stereotypes or biases.

However, it is important to remember that the burden of education should not solely fall on the LGBTQIA+ community. It is essential to seek out resources, read books and articles, listen to personal stories, and engage in respectful conversations. By taking responsibility for one’s education, one can contribute to a more respectful and inclusive society.

Etiquettes to Follow

Treating everyone with respect and empathy is crucial, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. However, following a few etiquettes around individuals from the LGBTQIA+ can help in building a more inclusive society.

Here are some etiquettes to keep in mind:

  • Using appropriate terminology and pronouns when referring to LGBTQIA+ individuals. If you’re unsure, it’s best to ask someone how they identify and what pronouns they prefer.
  • When engaging in conversations, listen actively and attentively. Validate people’s experiences and feelings without invalidating or dismissing them. It is important to be empathetic and understanding.
  • Respecting the privacy of individuals is crucial. It is unacceptable to “out” someone without their consent or share personal information about someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Just as with any other community, obtain consent before discussing personal or sensitive topics. Not everyone may be comfortable discussing their sexual orientation or gender identity, so it’s essential to respect boundaries.
  • Refrain from asking intrusive or inappropriate questions about someone’s gender identity, sexual orientation, or personal life. Respect people’s boundaries and only engage in conversations that are welcomed.

It is essential for society to recognise that the LGBTQIA+ community’s fight for equality is not just about legal rights, but about fostering a culture of acceptance and love. Through increased visibility, representation, and education, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create safe spaces where everyone can live their lives authentically. As we celebrate Pride Month and honour the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community, let us remember that allyship and support are vital forces too.
